The Art of Scratchboard with Rikki Fisher

The Art of Scratchboard with Rikki Fisher

What is Scratchboard

Scratchboard is a clay coated hardboard panel that is then coated with Indian ink. Using various sharp tools to scratch into the ink layer, the clay underneath shows through. For added dimension, colored inks can be added to the white clay areas revealed and then scratched again for additional highlights and volume

Scratchboard originated in the 19th century in Britain and France and became a popular medium for reproduction. It was often used in single-color book and newspaper printing. There has been a resurgence of this technique in recent years but with a modern twist.

What will I learn?

Day 1
Scratchboard tools and the marks they make
Rikki will present a short introduction into scratchboard with visuals, showing a variety of examples of styles and tools that can be used.
Participants will start by creating a test sheet to explore various scratch tools and how to make textures.
Once completed a small study will be scratched using one or more of the tools (bring a small item such as a leaf, feather or seedpod) or use one of the items Rikki brings along.

Day 2
A portrait study of an animal
Participants will start a 5x7 scratchboard piece of an animal. For those new to scratchboard an image will be supplied and they will get a step-by-step demonstration on how to proceed.
The goal will be to complete the first layer of scratching in the morning and working on layering with diluted ink in the afternoon.
