Day 1, Thursday 27 July: The South of France and its Painters

From the late 19th to the mid-20th century, the South of France was associated with some of Modernism’s leading figures; today, their legacy is an essential part of its identity. Some artists like Signac and Cézanne were in search of utopian landscapes, while Picasso imagined the nymphs and fauns of antique mythology playing on its beaches. For the Fauve painters, it was a laboratory in which to develop a new understanding of the role of colour. All were enchanted by this region’s heightened colours and dazzling light.

Day 2, Thursday 17 August: The Golden Age of Venetian Art

A unique set of cultural and material factors saw Venice establish itself as a major artistic centre in the 16th century. This mercantile city saw many innovations in the techniques of oil painting; these were enriched by the availability of rare pigments and luxury fabrics. The saturated colour and tonal subtleties to be found in the works of such celebrated Venetians as Bellini, Titian and Veronese were to have an enduring influence on European painting.

Day 3, Thursday 31 August: The Painters of Venice

Venice has not only been home to a prominent school of painting, but also a magnetic destination for foreign artists. While Canaletto and Guardi brought a local knowledge of the city to their canvasses, for J.M.W. Turner it presented a vision of romantic decline. The luminous atmosphere, water reflections and dense patterns of architecture made Venice an irresistible subject for the Impressionists, and above all for John Singer Sargent, whose example continues to influence artists to this day.
